About

In 2014, the Castle Creek Bridge and Hallam Street corridor were identified as a deficient link in Aspen’s bicycle and pedestrian network. This critical connection is along the busiest street in the city, yet there have not been any major upgrades in the area for nearly six decades.

Castle Creek Bridge / Hallam Street Current Challenges:

  • One of the Top 10 most accident-prone areas in the city
  • One of the highest vehicular totals for rural highways in the state
  • No significant upgrades in six decades
  • Indicated through Bike/Pedestrian Masterplan as the greatest deficiency in the City of Aspen for bike connectivity

Project Goals:

  • Improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
    • Reduce the conflict between vehicles and crossing pedestrians at 8th Street
    • Remove the conflict between bus users and bikers
  • Improve Aspen’s East-West pedestrian and bike connectivity
  • Create a trail on Castle Creek Bridge to connect through 7th Street onto the Hallam Street Bike Boulevard
  • Improve crossing infrastructure including ADA accessibility
  • Reduce the conflict between vehicles and crossing pedestrians at 8th Street
    • 8th St. intersection and crosswalk
    • 7th Street intersection
  • Upgrade transit infrastructure
    • Upgraded bus shelters with ADA accessibility and safety additions
    • Remove the conflict between bus users and bikers
  • Repair an aging roadway

Project Improvements:

  • Protected 8’ concrete trail
  • Upgraded bus shelters
  • 8th Street intersection and crosswalk is relocated
  • Repaired roadway
